诺斯所致力研究的是如何获得经济长期持续的增长 ,这关键不是资源配置的效率 ,而是适应性效率 ,为此制度就要相对于市场竞争相对价格的变化而进行调整 ;在制度变迁过程中 ,路径依赖自我强化的机制既会造成增长和改善 ,又会导致停滞和锁定 ,问题是累积报酬递增的增长不会自然实现抵消和补偿均衡 ,这样作为利益结构调整的制度变革就必须面对利益得失的补偿问题 ,这将是我国渐进性制度变革能否持续推进的关键

North's research focused on how to maintain sustainable economic development, the key to which is not the efficiency of allocating resources, but that of adaptation. For this purpose, systems should be adjusted according to the change of relative prices and market competition. In the evolution process of systems, the mechanism of path depending on self-strengthening brings about growth and improvement as well as stagnation and lock-in. The problem is that the increase of salary does not mean the natural realization of the balance of counteraction and compensation. Therefore the system evolution as the adjustment of profit structure must face the compensation for the loss of profits. This is the key to China's gradual institutional reform.
